Georgieva Recognizes Bulgaria's Team Europe Junior VolunteersBulgaria's EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva has handed certificate of recognition on behalf of the EC to 44 Bulgarian student volunteers, who are members of "Team Europe Junior."

Georgieva, who is the EU Commissioner for humanitarian aid, international cooperation, and crisis response, took part in a public discussion and an award ceremony recognizing the young Bulgarian volunteers.

Team Europe Junior are actively involved in the communication activities of the European Commission Representation in Sofia.

It was set up in February 2011 in order to take part in activities promoting the core ideas underlying EU integration.

Saturday's event closed the Bulgarian Volunteers' Tour, which was part of the European Year of Volunteers.

Data of the EC presented at Saturday's discussion at the Sheraton Sofia Hotel Balkan indicated that only 6% of the people in Bulgaria have taken part in volunteer activities.

"The European Year of Volunteers focused great attention on the importance of solidarity in these times of hardship. Some 100 million Europeans have taken part in volunteer activities, and the percentage is the highest in the Scandinavian states. A number of EU countries have regulations providing for volunteering to be counted as part of an employee's paid leave that are worked out by the state and the big employers," EU Commissioner Georgieva explained in Sofia, as cited by BTA.
