US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, has arrived Tuesday in the Libyan capital Tripoli on a surprise visit.

According to BBC, she has landed there on board of an US military aircraft which has taken off from Malta.

During the one-day visit, Clinton will meet with representatives of the Transitional National Council, TNC, civil activists and NGOs, and with the staff of the recently reopened American Embassy in Tripoli.

It is expected that the Secretary of State will present a number of programs for partnership between the US and Libya to include assistance for the wounded, student exchanges, and assistance in locating and dismantling weapon arsenals of dictator, Col. Muammar Gaddafi. She is the highest ranking American official to visit the country since the beginning of the unrest that led to the toppling of the Gaddafi regime. The US has provided so far USD 140 M in assistance to Libya.

The visit has been kept secret over security reasons.

On Monday, Bani Walid, one of the last two remaining Gaddafi strongholds, was captured by the forces of the Libyan rebels, i.e. the Transitional National Council.
