Bulgaria's Pupils Beat British Peers at Foreign Language Learning

Schoolchildren in Bulgaria are more likely to be taught multiple foreign languages than their UK peers, an international study shows.

The study of foreign languages among British children had plummeted to a record low, The Telegraph has alarmed.

Children from nations such as Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Latvia and Lithuania are more likely to be taught a number of foreign languages than UK children, the paper points out.

The table is topped by Luxembourg, secondary school pupils learn an average of two or three languages.

Across Europe the average pupil learns 1.4 languages, but in Britain, children study just one, which places the country at joint bottom together with Hungary and Ireland, according to the European Commission figures.
