Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi's oldest and most influential son, Saif al-Islam, escaped from custody "in the chaos of the situation," rebels have stated.

"He was captured and apparently he escaped. That's the information we're getting. To be honest, it's an embarrassment." rebel spokesman Hany Hassan Soufrakis has said, according to The Telegraph.

Saif al-Islam himself, however, denied he had been captured and insisted he and his father were safe and well and prepared to fight until the end. He popped up unexpectedly early on Tuesday in Tripoli.

Speaking in an interview for the CNN, Saif al-Islam said he will lead loyalist forces to repel the attackers and on to eventual victory.

He said that his father is safe in the Libyan capital, in spite of numerous NATO bombings of his compound in Bab al Aziziya.

Mohammed Gaddafi, who was reported arrested Monday, has also succeeded in escaping his captors.

On Tuesday, rebels gained access to the home of Muammar Gaddafi inside the Bab al-Aziziya compound. Hundreds of Libyan rebels are reported to have stormed Col Gaddafi's compound in Tripoli, taking it over.

According to EU's Foreign Affairs High Representative Catherine Ashton, the rebel forces controlled approximately 80% of Tripoli as of Tuesday.
