Wheat from Bulgaria's 2011 yield is in high demand on the international markets, according to Bulgarian Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov.

His statement came Saturday in Yambol, where he opened the new hunting season, after on Friday the Ministry of Agriculture and Foods released data showing that Bulgaria's agriculture sector has achieved a higher wheat yield in 2011 than was originally expected.

A total of 4.25 million metric tons of wheat have been harvested in Bulgaria in 2011, an increase compared with 2010 when Bulgaria's wheat output was 4.09 million metric tons. The average yield per decare in 2011 is 409 kg, compared with 360 kg in 2010.

Naydenov confirmed Saturday that this year Bulgaria produced 30% more high-quality wheat that is suitable for bread, reaching 53% of the total yield.

However, he did urge the Bulgarian farmers not to wait in order to sell their wheat because the wheat prices on the international market were only going to go down down, rather than increase.

"Those who keep their produce awaiting for higher prices will lose. Some have already lost by retaining most of last year's yield," he said.

He did stress that he was going on an official visit to Kosovo next week, after Kosovo's Minister of Trade and Industry Mimoza Kusari-Lila was in Bulgaria two days ago to inquire about food supplies in the wake of a Serbian embargo.

During his visit to Sofia recently, Jordan's Agriculture Minister also expressed his country's desire to buy Bulgarian grain, and wheat in particular.
