A brand new skateboarding park was opened in Bulgaria's capital Sofia Tuesday, marking the global Go Skateboarding Day.

"It looks a bit scary," the city's Mayor, Yordanka Fandakova, admitted upon cutting the ribbon at the official launching ceremony. The new facility is located in the capital's Student City district, a large student campus accommodating students from all of Sofia's state-owned universities.

The skateboarding park occupies an area of 3000 square meters and its construction has cost around BGN 600 000 (approximately EUR 300 000). It can be used free of charge between 11 am and 3 pm.

Sofia's skateboarders are delighted with the new facility, Boris Atanasov, said, calling it their "Promised Land".

Skateboarders in Sofia usually gather in front of the Soviet Army monument or the National Palace of Culture in the city's downtown area, which sometimes disrupts the free movement of pedestrians.

The Go Skateboarding Day (GSD) is an unofficial annual holiday conceived by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) to promote skateboarding.
