Bulgaria Appoints New Deputy Health Minister

Kiril Dobrev will replace Mihail Zortev as Bulgaria's new Deputy Health Minister, the ministry has announced.

Zortev announced his resignation on Monday, citing complex, but largely unspecified reasons.

Currently, Dobrev is serving as Director of the University Hospital in the Bulgarian town of Stara Zagora.

"I am taking over the post with all due responsibility. Most probably I will be in charge of hospital, out of hospital and emergency care," the new deputy health minister told Darik radio.

Bulgaria's health care system has been having many problems for years – understaffing, supply storages, braindrain, bribes to doctors and nurses to ensure better treatment, high debts and chronic lack of money.

These same problems and the "failure of its police in health care" by the government of the center-right GERB party have caused country-wide protests of physicians and a number of reshuffles in the health ministry.
