Bulgarian forward Dimitar Berbatov and Manchester United could not reach an agreement to extend their contract beyond this summer.
Before Christmas Berbatov was told by the club that he could be presented with a 2-year contract and a salary raise, but after the renewal of talks he has been offered only a 1-year extension, which is not in his interest.
Sources have commented that the presence of a returning Wayne Rooney and a rising and much younger Javier Hernandez have rendered Berba's position in the team precarious.
"We did not expect Hernandez to develop that well, and with Rooney returning in great for Berbatov's chances for a new contract are not that great," internal ManUn sources have told Goal.com.
Recently United's manager Sir Alex Ferguson motivated Berba's absence from his team's games precisely with the great play by Hernandez and Rooney.
Monday it was reported that the Bulgarian striker might return to his previous team Tottenham for a cut price.
