Bulgarian Primary Pupils to Go to Whole-Day School

A gradual phase-in of schooling during the whole day will be introduced for Bulgarian students up to the 7th grade, announced Minister of Education Sergey Ignatov.

For the 2011/2 school year this will be introduced for 2nd-graders, and will be gradually introduced for the other grades in the coming years.

Speaking to the Bulgarian National Radio about the new concept for primary education in Bulgaria, which is going to be presented later Tuesday, Ignatov also said he is committed to the introduction of a mandatory pre-school of two years.

The concept also includes the elimination of the grading of students from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades.

Nationwide exams will be introduced after 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th grade, in addition to the matriculation exam. On the basis of results in them students will be able to move to another school.

Students will also be able to choose a vocational school for their final two years of study after the 10th grade.
