Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi has offered an "exit deal" to the pro-democracy rebels saying he would step down if he and his family get respective guarantees.

Gaddafi asked that his resignation and his conditions for stepping down should be discussed at a meeting of the Libyan People's Congress (i.e. the Libyan Parliament), according to Al Jazeera, which cites members of the Libyan opposition.

The anti-government movement, however, is said to have rejected Gaddafi's exit deal offer as "humiliating" because of the deaths of thousands of people in the conflict between the dictatorship and the popular uprising.

The Libyan dictator is said to have asked first and foremost for guarantees for himself na dhis family. He sent a former prime minister, Jadalal Azuz Talhi, to Benghazi, the second largest city in the country, which is in the hands of the rebels, for talks on the exit deal.

Gaddafi is said to be willing to step down after 42 years in power, provided he and his family would not be prosecuted for their actions while running Libya, and that their wealth would be left intact. There has been no official confirmation of the exit deal report.

Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama has indicated that NATO is considering its options for a military intervention in Libya.
