Tunisia Reshuffles Government Over Protests

Significant changes to the interim government was announced in Tunisia Thursday by PM Mohamed Ghannouchi due to new protests against his cabinet which included allies of the ousted president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.

Ghannouchi, is one of the few high-ranking officials to retain their positions. Twelve ministers including those of defense, interior and foreign affairs, were replaced by figures considered independent late Thursday.

The interim government was formed after Ben Ali fled the country January 14 amid a mass uprising against unemployment, rising prices and corruption.

The wave of rallies in Tunisia was sparked by the suicide of fruit and vegetable seller Mohammed Bouazizi, who torched himself last month after police confiscated his fruit cart, cutting off his source of income. Subsequently, dozens of people died in more than a month of clashes
