Bulgaria’s Environment Ministry is preparing a new Waste Management Act, which will set serious goals to municipalities for recycling of waste by 2010, the Eco Minister Nona Karadzhova has announced.

On Friday, Karadzhova explained that the new act envisions that municipalities will have to recycle at least 50% of household waste and 70% of construction waste.

In her words, the act will set the objectives from the framework directive of waste, adopted in 2008.

“Without respective mechanisms, which should be set now and be followed by the municipalities in the next years, we cannot be prepared or meet the objectives in 2020,” Karadzhova said.

She has also explained that at present, efforts are focused mainly on solving the biggest issue of all operation programs, in her words, which is the lack of prepared quality projects.

The minister urged the municipalities to start making researches on their future waste treatment facilities, which will be needed in 5-7 years, since the preparation of such a project takes 3-4 years.
