ALEX FERGUSON feels Manchester United are just getting better as the title race hots up.

Dimitar Berbatov's double kept United top.

And Fergie said: "We're coming to good form. The last few weeks we have played some very good stuff and had that consistency, particularly defending.

"We were solid at the back. These are good signs for us. It's important to get that."

Sparkling United were far too good for Sunderland and Ferguson is convinced his team are starting to show the consistency he wants to stay in pole position right through to the end of May.

United were just 1-0 up at the break yesterday, despite creating a host of chances. Yet Ferguson was still delighted by what he had seen.

He added: "The first half was the game. We were fantastic. It could have been any score.

"We hit the bar, the post, the keeper made a couple of saves. We played some really good football, exciting stuff.

"Dimitar Berbatov could have scored four or five.

"He had some terrific opportunities and was very unlucky with some of them.

"Wayne Rooney had a couple of tries. He was very unlucky with the chip he almost got in over the keeper. He's getting there."

United took their foot off the pedal once Berbatov got his second goal in the 57nd minute, remembering their clash at Birmingham tomorrow.

Ferguson admitted: "The second half we put the tools away a bit. Maybe they were saving their legs.

"Going down there is always difficult. They've always had a strong home record and are difficult to beat on their own ground. We're well aware of that."

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was full of praise for United's performance in the first half.

He said: "They were absolutely fantastic and sometimes you have to hold your hands up. We were well beaten.

"Usually, United get better from here on in. People say they haven't played that well but they are unbeaten and top with a game in hand. You would not bet against them."
