Bulgaria to Launch Regional Black Sea Fisheries Body

Bulgaria will propose the creation of a regional structure to manage fisheries and help preserve resources in the Black Sea region, announced Minister of Agriculture Miroslav Naydenov.

Wednesday Naydenov met with newly-appointed director of European Commission DG Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Monique Paria in Sofia to discuss common work in the field.

Paria expressed satisfaction in Bulgaria's work in the EU Fisheries Operational Programme.

A contentious topic of discussion was the European Commission's proposal to reduce the quota of Bulgaria and Romania for the catch of turbot with 25% due to a drastic reduction of the population of the fish.

The Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture vowed to hold talks with countries from the region to tackle the problem with the population of turbot in the Black Sea.

Nevertheless, he stated that Bulgaria's position is resolutely against any reduction in its fishing quotas.
