The number of Bulgarian students in the United States dropped by 14% in the last year, according to a report, published annually by the US Institute of International Education (IIE) in Washington.
According to Deutsche Welle, the Open Doors report showed that despite the decrease, Bulgaria is the second Eastern European country with the biggest number of students in the United States. The first one is Russia with its 4,827 students.
The data revealed that this year, there were 2,495 Bulgarian students in the US, with 1,154 of them studying for Bachelor of Arts degree and 900 being enrolled in Masters programs.
"The United States continues to host more international students than any other country in the world," said Allan Goodman, President and CEO of IIE.
The total number of foreign students in 2009/2010 increased by 3%, year-on-year. Asia holds the leading place among continents in terms of international students, which are a total of 436,000. Europe ranks second with 85,084.
China has sent the biggest number of students to American universities this year – 127,628. Second is India with 104,897 students. The third place is for South Korea – 72,153 students.
Turkey is the the European country that has the most students in American universities – more than 12,000. It is followed by Germany (9,548), the UK (8,861) and France (7,716).
The most popular fields of study for international students in the United States in 2009/2010 were Business and Management, Engineering, Physical and Life Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science and Social Sciences.
