Women will be able to apply for all positions in the Bulgarian army, the Defense Minister, Anyu Angelov, has announced.

The new order will be published in the State Gazette and will replace the old one from 2005, forbidding women to hold some positions in the army, connected to searching people and the National Guard Unit.

Angelov said last week that soon Bulgaria will have guardswomen. He added, however, that they will have to meet certain requirements.

The minister pointed out that currently the women in the army are about 14% and they are not different "at first sight by the other military men." He expressed hope that the situation will be the same in the National Guard Unit.

Ever since the creation of the National Guard Unit army, there have been requirements for the guards to be between 178 cm and 182 cm in height, with a slender figure and not more than 82 kg.

"I am sure that there are and there will be women who would apply and be accepted in the National Guard Unit," Angelov said, adding that they would probably have a different uniform than the guardsmen.
