Bulgarian Eco Minister Claims Waste Plant Project on Schedule

The Bulgarian Minister of Environment Nona Karadzhova has stated that the project for construction of a waste processing plant in Sofia is going on schedule.
The Ministry of Environment has received questions from the European Commission, but, in her words, this was "absolutely normal".
Karadzhova also announced that the ministry has not discussed the option for the waste depot in the Bulgarian city of Lovech to receive 110 tons of waste from Sofia, as was reported in Bulgarian media.
"We have negotiated and we have signed contracts with the European Investment Bank for providing the necessary amount to the Sofia municipality for own funding of the project, which costs EUR 50 M," she said.
She explained that Bulgaria is currently negotiating the technical questions with the European Commission.
"Despite the fact that the project is under negotiations, the Sofia municipality will not wait the final approval of the project, but will begin to execute a big part of the elements in the system," the minister said.
However, Mihail Mikov from the Bulgarian Socialist Party, which was in power before the center-right GERB party swept the elections in July 2009, said he had information that there have been serious disagreements between Bulgaria and the EC on the issue.
"If you have such information, you have to make it public. If you depend on political pressure on EC employees, it will not be well-accepted from the Bulgarian government," Mikov told Karadzhova and hinted that the issue might cause her position as a Minister of Environment.
She, on the other hand, responded to the socialist that being a minister was not her dream.
"I have only taken up the cleaning of the serious mess you left behind," Karadzhova said.
