Education Minister: Bulgaria in Dire Need of Reform

Bulgaria urgently needs a fundamental reform in higher education and science, Education Minister, Sergey Ignatov, said Thursday.

The Minister pointed out universities and colleges must become subject of thorough analysis and revise the majors they offer along with the entire curriculum in order to level with the requirements of the local and European education markets.

Ignatov further focused on the wide-spread inefficiency in higher education pointing out some majors must be discontinued and some of the educational staff dismissed to increase competence and adeptness.

The Minister informed serious discussions on the new Higher Education Act and on a strategy for priority science financing are and will be ongoing.

He voiced disapproval of the idea of paid college education with the motive very few students will use it because the most popular majors are filled to capacity. Ignatov pointed out Bulgaria is below the requirements of the program Europe 2020 regarding the number of people with Bachelor's and Master's Degrees.
