The Members of the Bulgarian Parliament passed Tuesday the strategy for the establishment of a Food Safety Agency.

The proposal was submitted with the Parliament by the Council of Ministers. The Agency will be under the Agriculture Ministry and is to execute coordinated control, according to EU and local laws, on the entire food chain - food products, fodder, health care for farm animals, animal treatment, plant health and more.

The control will be carried out based on the method of risk assessment and other unified methods and approaches in order to guarantee objectivity, transparency, effectiveness and efficiency. The Agency will also be in charge of the registration and approval procedures, audits, staff development, and will prepare the long-term National Control Plan.

The move includes the establishment of a Risk Assessment Center within the Agency to became Bulgaria's partner of EFSA - the EU risk assessment body for food and feed safety, but it will provide independent research and evaluation.
