The District Prosecution of the Bulgarian city of Yambol announced Wednesday it has started the case against its mayor, Georgi Slavov.

Slavov is accused of defrauding the municipality when signing a deal for BGN 4.256 M for the town water supply and sewage in the fall of 2008.

He allegedly added to the original price BGN 1.7 M, which went to the local construction company's pocket.

The mayor is accused of breaking the Public Procurement Act, the Municipal Budgets Act, as well as the Territorial Development Act.

If convicted, he can receive from 3 to 10 years of imprisonment. He will also be banned from holding specific state or public positions.

At present, the Yambol Prosecutor's Office is investigating five more public procurement deals made by the local municipal administration.
