Veloevolution – a Bulgarian organization devoted to popularizing commuting by bicycle – has called a bicycle parade for Friday afternoon in Bulgaria's capital, Sofia.

The event is meant to be slightly provocative. Veloevolution call on participants to wear formal, ballroom, fashion or other attire considered high-class or official. The aim is to show that one can be smart businesslike and still ride a bike.

“Style and fashion doesn't mean the opposite to clean and practical” – this is the organization's punchline.

The event revolves around the idea of going to work by bicycle. The parade and “fashion review” are called at the end of working hours, 17.30 at the Alexander Nevsky cathedral square, and their route spans major Sofia boulevards.

In recent years, Sofia has been marking a steadily deteriorating traffic problem. At the same time, the city has hardly any infrastructure for bike-riding and cyclists face many obstacles and even dangers.

Current Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov has repeatedly claimed the designation of special bicycle lanes as an achievement of his term as Sofia Mayor (2005-2009).

A few days ago the speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament, Tsetska Tsacheva, said that the suggestion that MPs go to work on bikes is “just not serious”.
