Bulgaria Defense Minister, Anyu Angelov, has revealed that his Ministry has an BGN 11 M reserve to be spent on the re-structuring process involving the sacking of over 500 staff.

Angelov stated Friday that the redundancies, made necessary by the center-right GERB government’s budget cuts, are part of shrinking overall defense spending.

He also stated that mistakes may be made in what he called the first ever mass reduction of the military administration – this follows news that 60 sacked staff had taken the Ministry to court over their removal before the new Defense Act was passed.

Angelov concluded that the cuts in administration would not see a benefit to the budget this year as redundancy payments would have to be paid – for which the Ministry has a BGN 11 M reserve.

On Tuesday the Bulgarian Defense Ministry continued its re-structuring plan by starting the process of sacking 447 employees.

This latest wave of redundancies follows the decision on April 26 to release 130 employees from their positions in the Social Department of the Defense Ministry.
