Bulgarian Judges Help Colleagues with EU Legislation

Selected judges from around the country will become coordinators, helping their colleagues in Bulgarian court cases where the EU legislation must be applied.

The idea belongs to the National Justice Administering Institute. Its head, Pencho Penev, explained the institution, which trains magistrates, will offer full access to the European Union laws and court practice.

Penev says that in the 3 years Bulgaria has been a member of the EU, over 3 600 magistrates have been trained in EU legislation, but the training is still not sufficient in order to increase the quality of the courts' work.

The coordinators will be 67 and will be available to their colleagues for each case related to EU laws. They are selected by the general assemblies of each court and must enjoy prestige and respect and know a foreign language allowing them to read in original the decisions of the EU Court in Luxembourg. The Institute will monitor the efficiency of their work.
