All of the 190 pig farms with over 10 sows in Bulgaria now meet EU requirements for group housing of sows, according to a statement of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.

The Bulgarian food safety authority informed Friday that it had notified the European Commission that all farms in Bulgaria complied with EU pig welfare legislation as of January 1, 2013.

Under EU requirements for group housing of pregnant sows and gilts, the pen where the group is kept must have sides/walls/partitions greater than 2.8 m in length.

When fewer than six individuals are kept in a group the pen where the group is kept must have sides greater than 2.4 m in length.
