Energy efficiency is the biggest challenge before the Bulgarian cabinet's policy in the sector, US Ambassador to Sofia, James Warlick, believes.

Warlick took part Wednesday in a seminar titled “Green Initiatives,” organized by the Bulgarian Business Leaders Forum and the US and UK Embassies. The Minister of Regional Development, Rosen Plevneliev also attended the event.

The cabinet must focus on saving energy and building insulation instead of large energy projects such as the one for the building of a second Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the Danube town of Belene, Warlick said, adding Bulgaria ranks last in the European Union by energy effectiveness.

The UK Ambassador, Steve Williams, pointed out the buildings of the British Embassy in Sofia save 13% energy and 16% water each year.

Plevneliev explained the cabinet of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party has a clear plan about improving energy efficiency with insulation of buildings being one of the measures. The Minister said the insulation of a 75-square-meter apartment can lower the household electric bill by 70%.

The Forum, focusing on energy efficiency and green energy, is dedicated to April 22, the International Earth Day.
