Bulgaria Environment Minister Slams Politicization of GMO Act

Bulgaria Environment Minister, Nona Karadzhova, criticized the politicization of the issue of changes to the GMO Act while reacting to Thursday’s GMO protests around Bulgaria.

Karadzhova stated Thursday; “I want to emphasize again that the GMO Act was adopted in 2005 and proposed by the then socialist-led government - nearly in the version that we offer at the moment.”

Last week the center-right governing GERB party gave in to public pressure and proposed that all cultivation of GM crops should be banned for 5-years, in a change to the new GMO Act. Five major Bulgarian cities are holding Thursday protests against the other amendments to the Act.

“For the Nature” Coalition of NGOs together with mothers’ organizations are holding protests Thursday afternoon in Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, Ruse, and Veliko Tarnovo against the planned changes of the GMO act.
