Liberal MEP Antoniya Parvanova has stated that it would be a classic example of political game-playing, should Rumiana Jeleva be chosen as an EU Commissioner.

Speaking about Jeleva on Sunday on Darik Radio, Parvanova continued: "Her biggest problem is not her discrepancies in the declaration, her words, and so on. The biggest problem is her incompetence.

"The European coordinators' opinions were unanimous, including those of the EPP, that the applicant had made a very weak presentation and that there were significant gaps in it," she said.

"See what the assessments of the world media are. The "Financial Times" says unequivocally that the candidate that had the worst presentation was that of Rumyana Jeleva," said Parvanova.

"I was embarrassed," she added. "Four times, Bulgarian seamen have been kidnapped in the Gulf of Aden. At the moment there are two ships out there with Bulgarian sailors. Our Foreign Minister has to rescue them and it seems as though she is rescuing them, but she does not know where the Gulf of Aden is," said Parvanova, referring to an exchange in the Jeleva hearing on January 12.

Antonia Parvanova categorically stated that "henceforth Bulgaria should "wash its face" with a very competent candidate".

The MEP painted a profile of the possible replacement for Jeleva for the post of EU Commissioner for international cooperation, humanitarian aid and crisis response.

"Our candidate must be extremely competent, to prove that Bulgaria has people who do not try at all costs to meet their own ambitions, even if the price is the head of the Prime Minister and his reputation in Europe.

"Through their knowledge and their team work, they should show that Bulgaria has potential. The important thing is for the person to be competent and of good repute," Parvanova stated.

She noted that, in this case, the party affiliation of the candidate was not important. "Let him or her be from GERB – they have many smart, intelligent and decent people," she said.

Parvanova reminded that she had also criticized the Prime Minister when there were problems, but that "now I say, that many people have voted for him, he has found himself with a difficult task -why are they are they constantly placing mines and detonating them from below?

"There is no problem if it is a GERB candidate, no matter whether male or female. It is, however, important that this candidate is a worthy Bulgarian, knowledgeable and capable, not just being pretentious and collapsing in a nervous breakdown," Parvanova concluded.
