Bulgaria to Celebrate 750 Years since Painting of Boyana Church Frescoes

Bulgaria’s National History Museum has announced it would organize a campaign to celebrate the 750th year since the painting of the frescoes of the world-famous Boyana Church outside of Sofia.

The Boyana Church frescoes date back to 1259 AD, and are known for their pre-Renaissance features. The Boyana Church is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The campaign to celebrate the 750th anniversary will be under the patronage of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov, and Diaspora Minister, Bozhidar Dimitrov, who was the National History Museum head before he took his current cabinet post.

The campaign will include a number of initiatives for promoting the Boyana Church and for raising funds for its renovation.

An international science conference entitled “The Boyana Church between the East and the West in the 13th Century Art of Christian Europe” is scheduled for April 2010.
