Yane Yanev, leader of Bulgarian conservative party RZS, has strongly reacted in Parliament to statements made on Tuesday by EU President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Barroso had complimented the previous government of Sergay Stanishev in answer to questions posed in the European parliament by Martin Schulz, leader of the European group of Socialists and Democrats (GSD).

Yanev, leader of the conservative "Order, Law and Justice" (RZS) party, announced on Wednesday that he had taken strong exception to Barroso’s words, accusing him of intervening in Bulgaria’s home affairs.

"His statement has been unacceptable because he is taking a side," Yanev said.

He added that, if the government of the former Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev has in fact been loyal and honest, as Barroso had mentioned, then the European Union should immediately return all blocked funding to Bulgaria.

On Tuesday, Barroso had said that he had enjoyed "excellent joint work" with Sergey Stanishev and his government, "who have always been honest and loyal partners of the European institutions, as far as our common European project is concerned."

Yanev declared that his party would issue an inquiry to Barroso, to be tabled by one of the Members of the European Parliament. They would ask why Bulgaria had suffered imposed sanctions, and why the EC had published several critical reports for Bulgaria, when the President, Jose Manuel Barroso, had made the statement that the former BSP government had been loyal and honest.
