Manchester United's striker Dimitar Berbatov has expressed his happiness after becoming the top scorer of all time for the Bulgarian National Football Team.

After scoring twice against Malta in Wednesday’s football friendly, Berbatov has 47 goals in 76 matches surpassing the previous record of Hristo Bonev with 46 goals and former Bulgarian star Hristo Stoichkov who has 37 goals for the national team.

Upon returning to Sofia Thursday, Berbatov admitted that breaking the top scorer record of the Bulgarian National Football Team had been one of his goals.

“I had been aiming at that for a while. I am very proud of my achievement now. My next goal is winning the Champions League. I hope this will happen in this year’s edition. I came very close to winning it twice, and I hope the third time it will work out,” Berbatov declared.

He said Bulgaria’s half Stilyan Petrov of Aston Villa had a lot more matches for the national team than him, and wished him to break the record of former Bulgarian goalkeeper Borislav Mihaylov who holds the current record with 112 matches.

Berbatov also said he was satisfied with the 4:1 win against Malta in the friendly but stressed that the Bulgarian team had missed many shots on goal.
