Son of Rich Bulgarian Businessman Kidnapped in Public in Sofia

The 22-year-old Rumen Gunenski was kidnapped around 8 pm Monday night in the Studentski Grad Quarter of the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

Gunenski is the son of a rich businessman who is known for running fuel trading and construction business in the towns of Pravetz and Botevgrad located to the northeast of Sofia.

The 22-year-old man going back to his dormitory with a friend of his when a white van pulled over, and three masked men came out. They dealt the student several blows, and then forced him into the van, and drove away in western direction.

The abduction took place in front of many witnesses, said Kalin Georgiev, the Commissar General of the Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry who arrived on the stop together with a number of police units.

“We need to investigate whether this is the same group for kidnappings that has been torturing the Bulgarian society for a long time, or if it is a different one,” Commissar Georgiev said.

When he was forced into the van, Gunenski dropped his cell phone and one of his shoes.

The abduction happened near a dormitory building close to the National Sports Academy. The Studentski Grad ("Students' Town) Quarter consists mostly of dormitories of various universities in Sofia.
