Local taxes in the Bulgarian capital city, Sofia, will not be increase in 2010, according to the interim Sofia Mayor, Minko Gerdzhikov.

He announced this Thursday in connection to the changes in the tax legislation approved by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday.

The amendments increase the upper limit for determining the real estate taxes and taxes paid when acquiring property on real estates.

Gerdzhikov is convinced that control on tax payment must be tightened, and not the taxes be increased.

“We should ask the government to put into law such a decision, according to which those who have not paid their taxes to be refused administrative services. Our observation has showed that this year many companies, even if in good financial condition, delay or even do not pay taxes due. Our principle, low taxes but high payment rate, will be used in the next few years, too. Of course, this decision will be made by the City Council”, Gerdzhikov said.

He also gave as an example some countries that foresee in their legislation even prison for unpaid taxes.
