Mitrova’s Release Resulted from Bulgaria PM Pressuring Macedonia

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov exerted serious pressure on Macedonia for the release of Spaska Mitrova.

This was announced Friday by Diaspora Minister, Bozhidar Dimitrov. Macedonian with Bulgarian passport Spaska Mitrova was released from the prison in Skopje Thursday after serving 2 months and 8 days of her highly controversial three-month sentence.

Dimitrov said Borisov had used “silent diplomacy”, and in several private conversations with his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Gruevski, he Mitrova’s release “in a categorical tone.”

“Spaska Mitrova is not the first and will not be the last case of a Bulgarian persecuted because of their national identity,” Dimitrov said.

“Spaska Mitrova’s case is not over until she gets her child back, and both come for treatment in Bulgaria. The Military Medical Hospital in Sofia is ready to accommodate them,” he added.

Dimitrov also said over 20 000 Macedonians received Bulgarian citizenship in the last few years on the basis of proving their Bulgarian origin. 146 Macedonians got Bulgarian passports in September 2009.

Minister Dimitrov also said no Macedonian woman had ever been sentenced under the law that Mitrova was sentenced to three months in jail.
