The young Macedonian mother with Bulgarian passport, Spaska Mitrova, has been released from the prison in Skopje before serving her entire three-month sentence.

This has been announced by Bulgaria’s acting Ambassador in the Macedonian capital, Angel Angelov.

Angelov said Mitrova was currently in the Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje. Mitreva has been released in advance for her good behavior.

Mitrova, who has a baby daughter, was sentenced to three months in jail because she failed to provide her former husband with a bed in her parents’ house where she lives so that he could come and stay there every weekend in order to see their child.

The young woman was jailed on July 30, and her term should have ended at the end of October.

Angelov said the Embassy in Skopje was now considering the several other suits that have been filed against Mitrova. In his words, she is supposed to get back her daughter not that she free. The young child was given to her ex-husband for the duration of her term in jail.

Mitrova became a Bulgarian citizen at the beginning of 2009, and according to many Bulgarian politicians and public figures such as MEP Evgeni Kirilov, it was exactly this fact that led to the excessive and unfounded punishment that she received, and to the brutality with which she was handled.

For example, she was dragged for her hair out of her house because she did not want to leave her child. She was also repeatedly abused verbally because she is a Bulgarian citizen by both her husband and Macedonian police and officials.

Bulgaria’s Diaspora Minister, Bozhidar Dimitrov, has said that the Macedonian authorities wanted to make an example of Mitrova’s case in order to show that holding a Bulgarian citizenship did not bring any protection for its holders.

The Bulgarian authorities and public have protested repeatedly against Mitrova’s sentence and the way she has been treated. The case was also brought to the attention of the European Parliament.

A new court case is expected to be started as Mitrova’s former husband is going to dispute her custody of Mitrova’s baby daughter.
