Bulgaria was mandated to close landfills in 76 municipalities because they did not correspond to the requirements of the European Commission.

BGN 1 B are to be invested in the building of 23 regional landfills by 2013 per the proposal of Environmental Minister, Nona Karadzhova.

BGN 600 M should come from the operational program "Environment" while the other BGN 400 M will be provided by the State budget. The Sofia waste recycling plant is among the 23 projects. The amount has already been discussed with Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov.

Karadzhova pointed out Wednesday that the Sofia City Hall had the highest level of preparedness for its project, adding she was offering guarantees that the project would not take away the money of smaller municipalities.

The former leadership of the Environmental Ministry insisted for quite a while that smaller municipalities would suffer and that there is a need for public-private partnership for the Sofia waste recycling plant.

According to the new Environmental Minister only 5 out of the 23 projects are ready at the moment.

On July 16, Bulgaria was mandated to close landfills in 76 municipalities because they did not correspond to the requirements of the European Commission.
