The minister for sport in the regional administration of Ingushetia, Ruslan Balayev, survived an assassination attempt early Friday.

Balayev was targeted in the latest high-profile attack in the mainly Muslim North Caucasus, the Russian ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

Two people were killed in the incident but it is not clear if Balayev was actually in the car that was attacked.

Earlier reports suggested that the Minister had been killed but the Russian Federal Proscutor's office refuted these claims.

Last month an assassination attempt left Ingushetia regional leader Yunus-Bek Yevkurov gravely wounded in hospital.

Ingushetia has overtaken its neighbour Chechnya as the main centre of violence along Russia's turbulent southern flank.

On Wednesday the body of prominent human rights activist Natalia Estemirova was found in Ingushetia hours after she was kidnapped in Chechnya.

In a separate incident on Friday, a policeman was shot dead in the Chechen capital Grozny, Interfax news agency reported.
