Ingushetia President Fires Government over Poor Performance

Ingushetia’s President Yunus-bek Yevkurov has sacked his government October 5, saying the cabinet had failed to alleviate the region's widespread poverty.

Yevkurov said he ordered the government to resign due to unsatisfactory work for the republic’s social and economic development.

The president appointed an acting head of the Cabinet. He is the secretary of the Ingush Republic Security Council, Alexei Vorobyov.

The other members of the government will keep performing their duties until a new composition of the Cabinet has been formed.

Ingushetia has been rocked by a string of rebel attacks, including one in August when a truck packed with explosives blew up at police headquarters, killing at least 25 people and wounding 136.

Yevkurov, who was badly wounded in a suicide bomb attack in June, has repeatedly said that apart from extremist Islam it is local corruption and poverty that push many local young people into the hands of Muslim rebels.

"One of the main tasks of the government was namely to fight these negative issues. And because they did not cope with the task, the cabinet was sacked", presidential spokesman, Kaloi Akhilgov, said.
