Bulgaria's right-wing Blue Coalition has accused the governing Bulgarian Socialist Party and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in using political repression "like the ayatollahs in Iran."

"The ayatollahs' regime in Iran is killing people while our Foreign Ministry keeps its mouth shut", the Blue Coalition of the Union of Democratic Forces, and the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria have stated in a declaration on the continuing opposition protests in Iran after the June 12 vote and the reelection of incumbent Ahmadinejad.

The Blue Coalition points out that most of the EU member states had already condemned the ongoing violence in Iran.
According to its Co-Chair and former Prime Minister, Ivan Kostov, the reason behind the passive attitude of the Bulgarian government was the fact that Russia supported the "ayatollahs regime", and the Stanishev government conducted a foreign policy that was favorable to Russia.

The other Co-Chair of the Coalition, Martin Dimitrov, stressed that the Iranian authorities had admitted to voting discrepancies in 50 cities where the cast votes were more than the eligible voters.

According to Dimitrov, the BSP and the DPS used the same scheme in Bulgaria so there was no way their government would criticize the regime in Iran.

The Blue Coalition is also disappointed by the fact that the three-way coalition government did not want to invite observers from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The Blue Coalition believes this could threaten Bulgaria's membership in the CE, and certified that the DPS and BSP were trying to falsify the results of the July 5 elections.
