The EU Enlargement Commissioner, Olli Rehn, condemned the murder of the Albanian Member of Parliament, Fatmir Xhindi.

Fatmir Xhindi, 49, from the main opposition Socialist Party, was killed outside his home late Saturday. The incident happened in the town of Roskovec, about 100 kilometers southwest of the capital Tirana

"I strongly condemn the murder and extend sincere condolences to Xhindi's family and friends," Olli Rehn says in an official statement issued Sunday.

Rehn appeals to the Albanian authorities to investigate the crime with all possible means and send the perpetrators to trial.

Albania is facing elections on June 28 and many fear the murder is going to further increase the tensions in the country.
