A MP has been gunned down in Western Albania, Darik radio reports, citing the Associated Press.

The victim, Fatmir Xhindi, 49, Member of the Alabamian Parliament from the main opposition Socialist Party, was killed outside his home late Saturday. The incident happened in the town of Roskovec, about 100 kilometers southwest of the capital Tirana, Albanian officials said.

Xhindi has been shot with six bullets while parking his automobile. The MP died in the ambulance, on his way to the hospital. The killers, reportedly, fled the scene in a car.

The Socialist Party's leadership said Xhindi, who was serving a third term as MP, had just left an electoral meeting in his area, adding they were unaware of the motives for the crime.

The Albanian Police offered a EUR 250 000 reward for information about the perpetrators.

Albania is facing elections on June 28 and many fear the murder is going to further increase the tensions in the country.
