Bulgaria Celebrates 130th Anniversary of First Constitution

Bulgaria marks Thursday the 130th anniversary of the establishment of its constitutional State.

On April 16, 1879 the first Bulgarian Tarnovo Constitution was passed by the Constituent National Assembly. With this act, the Assembly laid down the foundations of the modern Bulgarian State and its separate powers - legislative, executive and judiciary.

The Tarnovo Constitution, praised as one of the most progressive for its time, guaranteed equal rights to all subjects of the Bulgarian Principality. It also introduced the common polling census and the passive and active right to run for elections.

The anniversary is celebrated with a solemn session of the Parliament attended by President Georgi Parvanov.

Prime Minister, Sergey Stanshev, and the Speaker of the Parliament, Georgi Pirinski will address the Members of the Parliament and the officla guests to include Cabinet members, magistrates, and clergymen.

April 16 is celebrated also for the Day of The Jurist.
