All emergency medical centers across Bulgaria have now been equipped with the opioid antidote Naloxone, a development confirmed by the Ministry of Health. The drug is used in cases of overdose and is considered critical for saving lives in emergencies involving substances such as fentanyl.
The available supply has been significantly increased following a donation from two private companies, bringing the total to more than 2,400 ampoules. This ensures that emergency response teams nationwide are able to intervene promptly in high-risk situations where rapid medical action is essential.
The move comes amid growing concern over the spread of powerful synthetic opioids. Data in recent years has pointed to a rising number of incidents and deaths linked to fentanyl use in Bulgaria, highlighting the need for stronger preparedness within the healthcare system. In this context, ensuring access to Naloxone is seen as a key measure in preventing fatal outcomes.
Naloxone works by quickly counteracting the effects of opioids on the body, restoring breathing and reversing life-threatening respiratory depression caused by overdoses. Its timely administration is widely regarded as one of the most effective ways to prevent death in such cases.
Health authorities, however, stress that relying on donations is not a sustainable solution. The Ministry is currently working on establishing a long-term mechanism that would guarantee continuous state-funded supplies of the medication and broader availability for vulnerable groups.
At the same time, discussions are underway to expand access beyond emergency settings. This includes the possibility of making Naloxone available for outpatient use, as well as introducing more user-friendly forms such as nasal sprays, which are already widely used in other European countries.
