Bulgaria: 50.5% of People Disapprove of the Overthrow of Petkov’s Cabinet

Resigned Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkow at a rally in support of his cabinet

The Bulgarian society is divided in its views on what is happening in the country. Among the instinctive momentary reactions to the way the government was overthrown, sympathy for Petkov's government prevailed, and this led to a situational mobilization of his supporters (which can also be seen in the approval of Nikola Minchev). Preferences are naturally more for forming a government in this parliament, although opinions are divided here. In the potential for forming a new government in this term, ‘We Continue the Change’ prevails over GERB. The blame for the fall of the cabinet is seen mainly in the mistakes of the government itself and some of the explanations related to various behind-the-scenes plans have not become widespread. The French proposal on the issue of North Macedonia has not convinced the public that Bulgaria's interests have been respected.”

These are some of the conclusions of an express telephone survey among a representative sample of 800 people, conducted by Gallup between June 23 and 25.

48.1% approve of the overthrow of the government, but another 50.5% do not approve of its overthrow. The data show a polarization and a certain consolidation of the government's supporters - it came obviously as a reaction to the way this government was overthrown, as well as to the moment of its overthrow.

35.3% see in today's situation a chance to elect a more stable government in the fall, but 59.2% believe that the situation is a problem for our country. The others hesitate. That is why the hopes of forming a government within this parliamentary term prevail - 57.9%, against 40.6% who want elections.

The expectations that the WCC will once again form a government (40.3%) seem to prevail against the possibility of GERB forming a government (18.2%) or other different formats with a third term (shares below 10%). Nikola Minchev, on the other hand, received approval - the positive assessments prevailed over the negative ones and were 39%, the negative ones - 31.6%, and the neutral ones - 19.8%. The others hesitate.

Regarding the explanations heard so far about the fall of the government, the explanation that it bears its own political guilt (65.2% agree with 33.6% disagree) prevails against explanations such as "there was a coup by the mafia" (41.6% agree, but 51% disagree), "Russia took it down" (19.5% agree against 72.7% disagree), etc.

The French proposal has so far left many disappointed. 25% believe that it has sufficiently taken into account the Bulgarian interests, but a clear majority of 59.5% believe that our interests are not taken into account. The others hesitate.
