New Dramaturgy Festival Opens in Sofia, Look out for New Bulgarian Plays

This spring Goethe-Institut Bulgaria invites stage arts lovers to a meeting with new plays from Bulgaria and Germany. The New Dramaturgy Festival is part of the New Stages Southeast three-year international project organised by Goethe-Instituts from the Southeast Europe region. The festival's programme in Bulgaria will focus on new Bulgarian texts along with texts by two of the most popular authors on the contemporary German scene - Maria Milisavljevic and Sasha Marianna Salzmann.

From 12 until 16 May, Sofia's art life will become even more vibrant thanks to the upcoming edition of the New Dramaturgy Festival, which is being launched this year with the aim of facilitating various approaches to writing and staging plays. Events in different formats will provide the space for stage readings and exchange of experience between young playwrights, famous German-language authors and the local audience. Project participants include the Goethe-Instituts in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, Romania, Moldova, Serbia and Cyprus.

The programme in Sofia will feature new Bulgarian plays and texts by two of the most popular names on the German scene today - Maria Milisavljevic and Sasha Marianna Salzmann. The New Dramaturgy Festival will also host the 10th edition of the ProText platform by 36 Monkeys, which this year is presenting new Bulgarian plays selected by the EURODRAM international network for contemporary drama. Intended to promote contemporary foreign and Bulgarian drama, the format takes place in the form of a series of performance readings. The Bulgarian authors featured in the 2020 selection are Martina Novakova, Miroslav Hristov and Presiyan Kuzov.  

The Drama Pact platform and Radar Sofia are presenting experimental art installations by directors making their debut - Nikolay Yordanov and Kristina Belomorska - as well as a performative game following the open Block Game format devised by Dutch theatre director Jan Ritsema.

As part of the festival, Maria Milisavljevic will moderate an international workshop for young playwrights.

The shows will be put on two different stages - at Goethe-Institut and at Vazrazhdane Theatre. All events offer free admission, registering in advance is required. The registration process will be opened on 5 May on the website of Goethe-Institut Bulgaria, where the full programme can also be seen.
