Next Bulgarian Elections Will Be First with Voting Machines Only

In a long 10 hours session National Assembly adopted important amendments and supplements of the Electoral Code.

The polling stations in the country with 300 and more voters will vote only with machines.

There will be an exception only in unforeseen external circumstances, when machine voting proves impossible and it is necessary to switch to paper ballot voting.

Paper ballots will be used for voting only in the sections with less than 300 voters, in voting with a mobile ballot box, in polling stations in medical establishments, homes for the elderly and other specialized institutions for providing social services, in polling stations of floating vessels under the Bulgarian flag and in polling stations outside the country, where less than 300 applications were submitted or in previous elections total number of the voters was less than 300.

Thus, in sections abroad with at least 300 voters the vote will be only with machines.

The changes in the Electoral Code were finally adopted today with the votes of "There is such a people", BSP, "Democratic Bulgaria" and "Stand up! Mutri Get Out".

They will apply to the expected early parliamentary elections. So far, in the polling stations of more than 300 registered voters, or about 9,400 polling stations, there was a choice of whether to vote with machines or with ballots.

According to the Central Election Commission, 789,923 people out of 3,334,283 voters cast their ballots on April 4 using machines.

There will still be paper ballots in the machine voting sections, if necessary, in case there are unforeseen circumstances.

Finally, GERB announced that it would refer the matter to the Constitutional Court for the decision to vote only with machines.
