Outgoing Prime Minister: Slavi Trifonov Should Not Be Coward and Accept Cabinet-Forming Mandate

"Mr. Slavi Trifonov should accept the mandate and explain what he will do and who he will designate for ministers. He should also explain why he cannot form a government with 165 MPs. No one makes them shake off the responsibility.  A leader who with 165 MPs says he's short of supporters and needs an overwhelming majority of 240 is a coward. We proposed to them the majority vote. What will happen in the coming months? Again, more than BGN 50 million will be wasted on elections.

Instead of giving this money to people, we will be seeking an absolute majority for someone," outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said during a meeting with his cabinet on Monday.

"It has already been a month since the regular elections were held, and the ne majority still behaves like opposition. Obviously this is easier in Bulgaria", Borissov said.

"We have waited so long to hear the names of Slavi Trifonov’s ministers," commented the leader of GERB. Further he made it clear that his party has always governed in coalition. "We have never been an absolute majority. I do not know why the Bulgarians think it is right to govern by proxy," he said.

"With all due respect to Antoana Stefanova – if she becomes prime minister will she ask MP Trifonov about everything? That's exactly what they were explaining, that it wasn't right. How's that going to work? Yes, no one is contesting the world chess title," he said.

Borissov also commented on the Recovery Plan, which Bulgaria must submit to the National Assembly and the EC, clarifying that Bulgaria has 12 billion euros in gratuitous aid.

"After over 30 sessions with the EC, we have tried to draw up a good plan. Its goal is to improve people's lives. It has four main pillars", Borisov said.

The outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev pointed out that more than 200 people worked on the document. He denied claims that there was only "asphalt and styrofoam" in the plan.

With such a parliamentary structure we will face a severe political crisis after the next election. Then I'll ask them what they're going to do. They'll say again, "Well, we don't have a majority." OK, when you don't have a majority, what do we do? Now say, "If we're first, we'll do - that and this. Let people know. We're already facing the most dangerous time. On the one hand, the pandemic is far from over, but at the same time we have to be very powerful to emerge from the crisis", added Borissov.

"Today two important for Bulgaria things will happen. The first is related to tourism. We're going to issue the order concerning the rules for entering the country. It envisions three possible ways - with a PCR or antigen test, with a vaccination certificate and with a recovery test carried out in the last six months. The second important thing, which is already a fact, today Pfizer vaccine first major supply arrived - 138,000 doses," outgoing health minister Prof. Kostadin Angelov announced at the meeting with the Prime Minister.
