The Four Paws animal charity foundation and Sofia Municipality have launched the first in Bulgaria “cat census”. The initiative is aimed at tracking the number of stray cats, identifying the feline colonies and analyzing the problem in Sofia, the pilot project will be cover Sofia Yavorov district as mass neutering is also in focus. Organizers hope that their initiative will also help raise the society’s awareness and welcome the involvement of cat lovers.

The Four Paws Vet Clinic in Bankya will continue to operate in other Sofia districts as before. The goal is not only to help more cats live better, create a comprehensive program focused on care for stray cats in Sofia, but also to change society's attitudes towards the "stray cat" issue.

Of all neutering alerts that Four Paws receive 70% are for cats. This is one of the few reliable sources of information about the scope of the problem of stray cats in Sofia. So far, there is no accurate statistics on their number.

In most cases, when activists try to control the feline population in a neighborhood under the "Neuter and Return" program, peoples’ attitude to strays changes for the better. The Four Paws are working towards a sustainable and humane solution not only to reduce the population of stray animals, but also attitudes towards them in society.
