Nationwide Lockdown Enters into Force in Bulgaria

As of today, March 22, until the end of the month, a third lockdown enters into force across the country in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus. In-person classes in schools, nurseries and kindergartens are suspended. Restaurants, malls, cinemas and theaters are closing.

Work is suspended at gaming venues, casinos and retail outlets with an area of over 300 square meters except for food supermarkets. Restaurants are allowed to work for home/office deliveries and to provide food pickup services. The measures also include mandatory one-way customer flows in all markets in the country. Gyms, swimming complexes, museums and dance schools are closed. Weddings and christenings with more than 15 people are prohibited. Higher education institutions also suspend training sessions with the exception of practical exercises in clinical disciplines.

Chief State Health Inspector Associate Professor Angel Kunchev commented that experience gathered in other European countries shows that the latest Covid-19 morbidity peak lasts between two and four weeks:

"Ten days is not a short time, obviously the reduction of contacts will have an impact, but whether it will be enough is difficult to say. Limiting contacts at this point should have a positive efect."

In Sofia, two kindergartens remain open for children of medics on the frontline - the 117th Kindergarten "Nadezhda" in Mladost district and the 124th in Krasno Selo district.
