Bulgarian NGO “Treatment without Borders” seeks volunteers to render assistance to the Bulgarian citizens who need medical treatment abroad.

“We will recruit volunteers until 3 December. Then our campaign will be officially ended, but volunteers may sign in throughout the year because no one knows when and where we may be needed,” Victoria Ilcheva, “Volunteers” department manager in “Treatment without Borders” NGO, said during the “Horizont before Noon” radio program.

“Treatment without Borders NGO assists patients, providing background information related to treatment and does the translation when communication is needed with a hospital team. The volunteers accompany patients at their arrival to a hospital in a foreign country and ensure their transportation to a given hospital.

“No previous experience is needed, the important requirements are that volunteers live or study abroad, speak fluently the language of a respective country as well as the Bulgarian and have flexible timetable. Even if your day schedule is packed you have to be punctual and responsible and be ready to provide assistance to the Bulgarians who need treatment,” Victoria Ilcheva added.

At the peak of the Coronavirus epidemic, many hospitals abroad have rescheduled their elective treatment which affected the patients whose elective surgeries were postponed till later time.

“We have patients who are at a more advance stage of medical treatment, who have been already admitted to hospitals but we continue helping them, whereas the medical facilities allow the translators to visit patients provided the necessary precautions are taken.

Regardless of the pandemic development, we are making aggressive efforts to help the patients who seek information about medical aid abroad and such requests account for 50% of all calls,” Ilcheva emphasized.

Recently, the number of patients who receive medical treatment abroad has dropped by 20%.
