The number of tourists in the fortresses and museum sites in Bulgaria’s old capital, Veliko Turnovo, is four times lower this summer compared to the previous one, according to data of the Regional Museum of History. To stimulate the flow of tourists, the sites work with extended working hours and during the weekends historical re-enactments are offered.

In July, 18,801 people visited the architectural landmarks, museums and the open-air and indoor expositions of the sites managed by the Regional Museum of History in Veliko Turnovo.

"Interest is beginning to revive, especially over the weekends," said museum director Ivan Tsarov.

He explained that previously there were more foreign tourists, who accounted for about a third of the total number of visitors. There were groups of students and other organized groups from Bulgaria, he added.

Hoteliers and restaurateurs report up to 50% decline in their work.

As a positive trend it is pointed out that the tourists in Veliko Turnovo in July were as many as the whole first quarter of this year./BNT
